Shopify supports several discount types: percentage off, fixed amount, free shipping, and buy-X-get-Y. You can limit codes by usage, customer, minimum spend, or date, and combine some discounts depending on your settings. Used well, discounts drive urgency and reward loyal customers; used carelessly, they erode margin.
A real project we learned from
A while back, a client came to us for a $700 store build. The work went smoothly over two weeks and they were genuinely happy — until the final request: apply two separate discounts to the same product at the same time. Out of the box, Shopify does not stack two discounts on a single item, and doing it cleanly needs a Shopify Function (or an app). The client did not want an app, and despite our explanations, they cancelled the project.
The lesson? Discount rules that sound simple — "just add two discounts" — often are not straightforward on Shopify. Setting that expectation early saves everyone time and money. The good news: with Shopify Functions, custom stacking and combined discounts are absolutely possible today.
