Designing a Database for a Custom Web App

The database is the foundation of any web application. Get it right and everything else is easier; get it wrong and you fight it for the life of the product. Here is a practical, non-academic look at how to design a database that scales.

Start with the data, not the screens

Before writing any code, map out the real-world things your app deals with — users, orders, products, invoices — and how they relate. Each becomes a table; the relationships between them (one-to-many, many-to-many) define your structure. This model matters more than any framework choice.

Core principles that keep you sane

  • Normalise first — avoid duplicating the same data in multiple places.
  • Use clear primary & foreign keys so relationships are enforced by the database.
  • Index the columns you search and join on — this is the difference between fast and painfully slow.
  • Pick the right data types and set constraints so bad data never gets in.

Plan for growth from day one

Design as if the table will hold millions of rows, even if it starts with hundreds. Add indexes deliberately, avoid queries that scan whole tables, and think about how reporting will work later. A little foresight here saves expensive rewrites down the line.

Common mistakes to avoid

Storing everything in one giant table, skipping foreign keys, no indexes, and putting business logic that belongs in code inside the database (or vice versa). Also: forgetting backups and a migration strategy. A schema that cannot evolve safely becomes a bottleneck fast.

Relational vs NoSQL

For most business apps — anything with orders, users, inventory or invoicing — a relational database like MySQL or PostgreSQL is the safe, proven choice. NoSQL shines for specific cases like huge unstructured datasets, but it is rarely the right default for a typical web app.
